Controlling ticks in areas with heavy tick infestations is notoriously difficult. Most typical flea control products are NOT effective for tick control. Many products make claims for tick control, but three products seem to stand out and receive client commendations.
- Preventic ® Tick Collar (Virbac, Inc.) for dogs: This collar contains the insecticide amitraz, which is found in topical medications (ie, rinses) used to treat some forms of mange. However, amitraz appears to interfere with the abillity of the tick to actually feed on the pet...by paralyzing the mouth parts of the tick. Experience (with my dog and client feedback) and a recent study suggests that it works well.
- Revolution contains an avermectin drug called selamectin and is used as a topical "pour-on" product once monthly for flea control. Studies performed by Pfizer show that the product is very effective at controlling tick infestations, as well. I am not aware of independent studies or tests that confirm the efficacy of this product.
- Frontline® Top Spottm or Spray Treatment (Merial): This product is available as a spray (Spray Treatment) or a topical spot treatment (Top Spottm) for dogs or cats. The product is also an excellent flea control product, and my experience suggests that it works well for tick control, and a recent study confirms the value of this product.
